What's been announced about NEET 2027
- 15 May 2026: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said NEET UG would move from OMR pen-and-paper to a computer-based test (CBT) 'starting from next year' (2027). He blamed the OMR format for the 2026 leak and cited the Radhakrishnan committee's CBT recommendation. The report said the exam would need about 20 shifts with score normalisation, and that NTA would issue guidelines later. Source
- 29 May 2026: In a Supreme Court affidavit, NTA said NEET UG will move to CBT and that 'the transition will be implemented from the next examination cycle', in consultation with the Health Ministry. It noted the Radhakrishnan committee had recommended CBT plus multi-session and multi-stage testing. Source
- 8 Jul 2026: A PTI report quoting unnamed sources said the 2027 CBT plan would run the exam over at least six days at more than 1,000 vetted centres, like JEE. The report said the plan was still being finalised, so this is not official. Source
- 26 Jul 2026: Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on 25 July 2026 and Pralhad Joshi took charge as Union Education Minister on 26 July 2026. The same day PM Modi announced a high-powered exam-reform task force led by Nandan Nilekani to overhaul NTA exams. Source
- 30 Jul 2026: Parliament passed the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026: Lok Sabha on 29 July and Rajya Sabha on 30 July. It sets 5 to 10 years' jail and fines up to Rs 50 lakh for paper-leak offences, and at least 7 years for organised crime. Source
- 5 Aug 2026: The Centre's affidavit of about 3 Aug 2026 softened the earlier statements. It told the Supreme Court that moving NEET to CBT is 'presently under active consideration' but not decided, and that a single-stage versus two-stage (JEE-style) format is also being considered. The final decision will follow the Nilekani task force's recommendations, and candidates will get adequate notice. Source
- 18 Sep 2026: The Solicitor General told the Supreme Court that the Nilekani panel was likely to submit its first interim report by the end of September 2026. Source
- 2 Oct 2026: Education Minister Pralhad Joshi reviewed NTA exam readiness. Careers360 reported that NTA is finalising a CBT infrastructure strategy for NEET UG 2027, but NTA officials said the final CBT decision will follow the Nilekani task force report. Source
