NRI quota MBBS: who qualifies and what documents you need
Every point below links to its official source.
Key facts
- MCC fills 15% NRI seats in deemed universities, and NRI/OCI/PIO candidates are shown NRI seats, AIQ General seats and deemed seats. A candidate can opt for only one type of reservation. [1]
- MCC follows the Anshul Tomar v. State of MP (2008) principles: the candidate qualifies if a parent, or a first-degree relative such as a real brother or sister, is an NRI ordinarily living abroad. [1]
- A wider 'nearest relation' (uncles and aunts, grandparents, first cousins) may also sponsor, but only if they are an NRI living abroad, have actually looked after the student as guardian, and file an affidavit. [1]
- Category I (NRI parent or sibling sponsor) documents include the NRI certificate from the embassy or consulate, a notarised affidavit to fund the whole course and living costs backed by an NRE passbook, and relationship verification by a revenue officer (Tehsildar). [1]
- Candidates converting from Indian to NRI category with a legal guardian as sponsor must show legal guardianship under the Guardians and Wards Act, 1890, along with the guardian's passport, NRI certificate and NRE-backed sponsorship affidavit. [1]
- MCC's NRI Document Verification Committee checks uploads online, and candidates get a window to fix any deficiency. Conversion to NRI is provisional until originals are produced at the allotted college. [1]
- NTA requires NRI and OCI applicants to upload a certificate from the Indian diplomatic mission in their country of residence and keep the original for counselling. [2]
- States run their own NRI quotas. In Tamil Nadu, for example, NRI seats are up to 15% of management-quota seats, and unfilled NRI seats revert to management general from Round 3. [3]
- NRI fees are much higher than regular fees; Tamil Nadu's 2026 self-financing MBBS NRI fee was listed at Rs 27–30 lakh a year. [3]

Can my NRI uncle sponsor me?
Only if he is an NRI ordinarily living abroad, has genuinely acted as your guardian with evidence, and gives an affidavit. MCC asks for legal proof of guardianship.
Can I pay MCC fees from an NRE account?
No. Move the money to an NRO account first; refunds also go to the NRO account.
