Nursing jobs in Germany for Indian nurses
The official route from an Indian nursing degree to a registered-nurse job in Germany, with costs and pay.
Germany needs nurses, and Indian B.Sc Nursing and GNM nurses can work there as a registered nurse (Pflegefachkraft) once their qualification is recognised. Here is the official route, step by step, with what it costs and where people get cheated.
Step by step
- Apply for recognition (Anerkennung) to the authority of the German state where you will work. The application can be made from India, and you don't need German to apply. The official finder tells you which office handles your state (Anerkennung in Deutschland). Fees vary by state; North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, charges up to €277.50, and decides within 4 months of a complete file.
- Get the result. Indian nursing training usually differs from German training, so most applicants are asked to close the gap in one of two ways: a knowledge test (Kenntnisprüfung: about 45 minutes oral plus about 180 minutes practical, each part retakeable once) or an adaptation course (Anpassungslehrgang, typically 8–11 months in a hospital). You can skip the full comparison and go straight to one of these, but you can't change your choice later (Baden-Württemberg FAQ).
- Learn German to B2. German isn't needed to apply, but you need B2 before the licence to use the title is issued. Each state lists the certificates it accepts; Bavaria's list includes Goethe, telc (including telc Pflege), ÖSD, TestDaF and DTB (Bavaria language notice).
- Get the right visa. Usually the recognition visa (§16d) to complete the test or course in Germany: up to 24 months, with side work allowed up to 20 hours a week (Make it in Germany). The recognition partnership visa needs a job offer from a German employer (details). After you get your licence, you switch to a skilled-worker permit for up to 4 years (details). Official pages describe A2 German as the usual minimum for the §16d visa; Triple Win asks for B1 by the visa stage. Confirm with the German mission.
- Work as a registered nurse and move up the pay scale.
Pay (municipal hospitals, TVöD-VKA)
| TVöD nursing grade (from 1 May 2026) | Monthly gross, entry | Monthly gross, top step |
|---|---|---|
| P7 (typical registered nurse) | €3,510.30 | €4,305.40 |
| P8 | €3,701.21 | €4,488.98 |
Plus a nursing allowance of €141.82 a month. Source: VKA TVöD nursing pay table. Other public employers, private hospitals and care homes may pay differently; tax and social insurance come off the gross.
Government-backed programmes (free)
- Triple Win (Germany's Federal Employment Agency with GIZ and NORKA Roots, Kerala): for GNM and B.Sc nurses; free for candidates; B1 German is needed by the visa stage and B2 is taken in Germany (Bundesagentur für Arbeit).
- ODEPC Kerala "Work in Health" recruitment to Germany: free, age limit 40 (ODEPC).
Avoid fake agents
Use only recruiting agents registered with India's Ministry of External Affairs, and check their licence on eMigrate. The MEA caps agent fees at ₹20,000 per emigrant (MEA); it had notified 3,505 illegal agents as of 9 April 2026, and complaints go to its helpline 1800 11 3090 (MEA overview). Government programmes like Triple Win charge nothing.
Common questions
Do I need German before applying for recognition?
No. You can apply for recognition without German, but you need B2 German before the licence to work as a registered nurse is issued.
Can GNM nurses go to Germany?
Yes. GNM and B.Sc Nursing holders can apply for recognition; Triple Win accepts both. Most applicants must pass a knowledge test or complete an adaptation course.
What does a nurse earn in Germany?
In public hospitals under the TVöD nursing table from 1 May 2026, grade P7 starts at €3,510.30 gross a month and rises to €4,305.40, plus a €141.82 nursing allowance.
How much can an agent charge?
India's MEA caps recruiting agent fees at ₹20,000. Use only agents registered on eMigrate; government programmes such as Triple Win are free.
